Forensic Assessment FAQs

What is required before scheduling an assessment?

Prior to proceeding with a forensic assessment, we require all relevant records (e.g., legal, medical, psychiatric/mental health, employment, academic records) at least one month before the first appointment.

How long does an assessment take?

It depends on the legal question, level of cooperation, and the amount of file information to review. In general, please plan for anywhere from one full six-hour day or up to six one-to-two hour sessions of in-person contact.

What does an assessment include?

This varies depending on the legal question, Dr. Goossens’ clinical opinion, and any recent prior psychological assessments available. Assessments may include an interview with the evaluee, a collateral interview, and psychological testing.

How can I best prepare for the assessment?

Try to ensure a good night’s sleep and take prescribed medication as usual. Arrive sober and avoid alcohol or non-prescribed substances for at least 12 hours before the assessment. You are welcome to bring snacks and water for scheduled breaks.

Where does the assessment take place?

We use a hybrid model. Interviews may take place virtually or in person at Dr. Goossens’ office. Most psychological testing requires at least one in-person visit.
